On May 17, 2025, BYD, a global new energy vehicle giant, held a global launch event for its electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler batteries, marking its official entry into the low-speed electric vehicle market. This move will not only break the inherent pattern of the traditional two-wheeler and three-wheeler industry, but also may trigger a reshuffle in the market that has been dominated by lead-acid batteries for many years.

BYD's cross-sector expansion brings multiple benefits to both consumers and the industry.

Previously, lead-acid batteries would run out of power after 50 kilometers in winter, but now lithium iron phosphate batteries easily double this range. This is sufficient for long-distance commuting and cargo transportation in rural areas. Additionally, these batteries support fast charging, eliminating the need to wait by charging piles overnight.

Lead-acid batteries need to be replaced annually, while lithium iron phosphate batteries have a service life of 3 to 5 years. Although lithium iron phosphate batteries are slightly more expensive upfront, they end up saving money when considering the total cost over time.

BYD may integrate the intelligent systems used in its automobiles into electric two/three-wheelers. In the future, users will be able to check battery levels, locate their vehicles, and unlock them remotely via their smartphones. This transformation will turn electric two/three-wheelers from simple "running machines" into connected intelligent tools.

BYD's entry into the market has directly impacted the two core segments of the traditional two-wheeler market.

Survival Crisis for Lead-Acid Battery Manufacturers. Lead-acid batteries once accounted for 70% of the low-speed vehicle market. However, through large-scale production and vertical integration of the supply chain, BYD has significantly reduced the cost of lithium iron phosphate batteries, transforming them from a "high-end option" into an "affordable necessity".

Forced Transformation of Industry Brands. Traditional brands focusing on two-wheeled and three-wheeled electric vehicles have long relied on lead-acid batteries. BYD's entry into the market is likely to force these brands to upgrade their technologies. Meanwhile, smaller brands face the risk of elimination and need to shift to original equipment manufacturing (OEM) or target niche markets.

BYD's entry into the market has injected technological vitality and competitive impetus into the low-speed electric vehicle industry. From the phasing out of lead-acid batteries to the rise of lithium iron phosphate batteries, and from price wars to value wars, this transformation will ultimately enable consumers to enjoy safer and more intelligent travel experiences at a lower cost.
